Lawn care schedule: when to fertilize
A typical year of lawn care, for the two families of grass. Dates are for the northern hemisphere; adapt them to your weather.
Cool-season grass
Fescue, ryegrass and bluegrass grow in spring and fall, and suffer in summer heat.
| When | Step |
|---|---|
| Mid-March | Crabgrass preventer |
| Mid-April | Early spring feeding |
| Late May | Weed and feed |
| Early July | Grub control |
| Mid-September | Fall feeding |
| Early November | Late fall feeding |
Warm-season grass
Bermuda, zoysia and St. Augustine green up in late spring and go dormant in winter.
| When | Step |
|---|---|
| Mid-February | Crabgrass preventer |
| Late April | First feeding |
| Mid-June | Second feeding |
| Early July | Grub control |
| Early September | Fall crabgrass preventer |
Adapt it
These are typical dates, not rules: soil temperature and local advice come first. In the southern hemisphere, shift every date by six months.
